Together, building a better future
Beechwood is rated a 3 star ‘Excellent’ service by the Care Quality Commission. It is a very homely traditional property located in Alvaston on the outskirts of Derby. Alvaston is a busy and vibrant community and the home is just five to ten minutes’ walk from local shops, pubs and a family restaurant. It is also a ten-minute walk from Alvaston Park.
The house has recently been fully refurbished and all rooms, including the 8 bedrooms, have been decorated and furnished to a very high standard. Communal space comprises a modern fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable and spacious lounge, a large dining room, a craft and ‘chill-out’ room and a large rear garden with two patio areas.
Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor. One of them has an en-suite WC. There is a communal bathroom with a bath, shower and WC serving both rooms. The other six bedrooms are on the first floor. Two of these have an en-suite shower and WC but all have a sink and a mirror. There are two communal bathrooms on the first floor, each with a bath, shower and WC.
All bedrooms comply with the National Minimum Standards for homes registered prior to August 2002 and are as follows:
Room 1: 12m² (First Floor)
Room 2: 12m² (First Floor)
Room 3: 17m² (First Floor, en-suite)
Room 4: 17m² (First Floor, en-suite)
Room 5: 12m² (First Floor)
Room 6: 14m² (First Floor)
Room 7: 16.5m² (Ground Floor)
Room 8: 12m² (Ground Floor - en-suite WC)
All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard. In addition to a fitted carpet and curtains, each has a wardrobe, chest of drawers, two chairs, desk, lockable space, shelving, bed, bedding and towels. However, the Service User may elect to reject or add to these items should they wish. There may also be a reduction/increase in this provision if a specific risk/need is identified within their Care Plan or risk assessment. All bedrooms are for single occupancy only.
Service Users may personalise and decorate their own bedroom to their own taste, including buying or bringing in furniture and electrical equipment, providing it meets fire regulations and/or PAT testing.
Each bedroom has windows that can be opened by the Service User if they wish, although all windows have restrictors fitted for their protection. All bedroom doors are fitted with a lock, for which the Service User holds the key. These can be locked from the inside and outside. Shift leaders hold a master key in case of an emergency. The bedroom doors do not have a letterbox; all mail is delivered through the main front door and any private mail for residents is given to them, unopened, by staff. Each room also has two double sockets and a television aerial socket. The bedrooms do not have a telephone socket fitted. A cordless telephone is available for all clients to use in private should they wish. All persons, including staff, wishing to enter a bedroom will obtain permission from the Service User first (except in the case of an emergency or concern for the wellbeing of the Service User).
There is off-road parking for two vehicles, with further parking available in a nearby side street. Beechwood shares a 7-seater people-carrier with our other home in Derby for direct access to Derby’s shopping and leisure facilities. There is also a bus stop nearby for independent access to the city centre.
